Khujand City Walking Tour
Three hours through one of the oldest cities in Central Asia.

We start at Kamoli Khujandi Park and walk the old city: the fortress and its museum, the Kamoli Khujandi complex where history and poetry meet, the mausoleum of Sheikh Muslihiddin, and the Panjshanbe bazaar — one of the biggest traditional markets in the region.
On the way we stop at the Oshi Palov centre so you can eat real Tajik osh rather than read about it. This is not only sightseeing: it is the traditions, the daily life and the stories of Khujand that most visitors never hear.

The Seven Lakes — Haft Kul
Seven lakes, one valley, seven different colours.
One long day, or two with a night in the valley
The Haft Kul valley climbs from Shing up to the seventh lake, and every lake on the way has its own colour and its own name. We drive as far as the track allows and walk the rest.
It can be done in a long day from Khujand or Panjakent, or stretched over two days with a night in a village house by the water — which is what I would tell you to do.
Fann Mountains & Iskanderkul
The mountains that made me want to film this country.
Two days and up · late May to early October
Iskanderkul, the lake Alexander the Great is supposed to have given his name to, the waterfall below it, and the valleys around. For walkers we can go further and higher, sleeping in villages rather than hotels.
Outside that season the high passes close, and I will tell you so rather than sell you a trip that will not work.
Istaravshan, Mastchoh & the Sughd valleys

Istaravshan and its old town of craftsmen, and the villages of the Mastchoh district up the Zarafshan valley where I grew up. This is the part of Tajikistan that almost no visitor sees, and the easiest thing to add on either end of a mountain route.
